The Panasonic AG-AC7 Shoulder-Mount AVCHD is Full HD camera that enables a truly professional style of operation. Professional projects require stable operation over long periods of time and manual control over the picture, with smooth adjustments. The AC7′s shoulder-mount design, its relatively low power draw from the included long-life battery and selectable-bit-rate AVCHD recording to high-capacity SD/SDHC/SDXC cards all serve to facilitate long days of shooting events, weddings, news and anything else that requires you to be on the move, ready to shoot, camera on shoulder. It’s also perfect for houses of worship and educational institutions that teach manual settings and a professional style of camera operation. For ease in completing both SD and HD projects, the AG-AC7 camera features AVCHD recording at 1920 x 1080 and 720 x 480, both at 60i. The built-in 16.7x (optical) / 23x (Intelligent) zoom lens starts out nice and wide at 35.8mm (35mm equivalent), so indoor shooting does not

  • Full HD 1920 x 1080 Recording: The AG-AC7 camcorder lets you shoot with Full HD picture quality (1920 x 1080 at 60i), allowing you to capture extremely fine details of the scenes and objects you’re recording
  • Professional Shoulder-Mount Design: The camcorder has a large hand grip with a large zoom lever mounted on top (helpful for smooth operation during low-angle shooting). The wide-diameter, easy-to-hold manual focus ring enables smooth, positive operation and quick, precise control over focus
  • HD/SD Recording in the AVCHD Format: The AG-AD7 records to the AVCHD format in both HD and SD resolutions, with modes that range from 17 Mb/s HA mode (1920 x 1080) to 4.5 Mb/s SX mode (720 x 480). See Specifications tab for full details
  • Zoom Lens – 35.8mm at Full Wide: The AG-AD7′s zoom lens achieves 35.8mm (35mm film equivalent) at the wide end. This is ideal for capturing a panoramic vista or a fuller view of a small room. The optional VW-4607H Wide Conversion Lens (sold separately) expands the view to an even wider 25mm
  • Intelligent 23x Zoom: Intelligent Zoom employs the Intelligent Resolution technology of the camcorder’s image-processing LSI to maintain the clear, beautiful HD image quality for images that go beyond the optical zoom range

I have just received this cam today, and I took it out for a test. At HX (9Mbps) the footage quality is so clear and detailed that when you move it to the next 3 higher settings you can’t really tell the difference on a large monitor or HDTV unless you are a pro and you know what to look for.

At this same setting, I noticed it uses about 3.64 Mb for each 4 seconds of footage, so if we round it 4 to 4, you’ll get 4 hours and 20 minutes out of a 16Gb SD card, matching perfectly the life of the camcorder’s battery (4 hrs 50 min).

I am buying a sturdier tripod; even a “solid” photo camera tripod will shake when you touch the controls because there is too little base and top heavy. The two built-in shoes and the microphone and headphones jack are awesome features, and I got them set up with a 160 LED light and a wireless receiver, which complete the functionality and make the overall unit look very professional. I’ll see if I can upload some pics.

At the current resolution (9 Mbps HX) I zoomed in on a P-thouch label, and I could literally see the pixels that the letters were made of, I am impressed beyond words with the footage quality.

Think about it this way: if you spend 6 months taking two courses, reading the top 10 books on movie making, and shooting at least 100 hours, experimenting with good editing software, and you finally produce a good quality film for your clients, nobody will ask if you shot with a $400 camera or a $4000 camera. On the other hand if you buy a $5000 camera and your skills leave to be desired, the camera won’t make up for your bad creation.

One last word, there are a couple of consumer cameras out there that claim to shoot 60p. [revised] Now there are cameras that will shoot 60p in 720 and 1080 at affordable prices. All in all, for around a thousand bucks, I can’t think of a job this camera can’t do.

Every feature I need, manual ring control, and a ton of “auto” features. Love it!

Awesome Professional Camera, March 20, 2012

This camera is so much lighter than I thought it would be which is a big plus for me. I was wanting to purchase a Canon XH A1 and worked very hard to save my money. Well I am so glad I saved around $2700 buying this one instead. I cannot see the difference after testing each camera…so I think the XH A1 is completely over-priced and overrated. This camera is great in all conditions and it is easy to set up. Crystal clear picture and sound…just as good as the XH A1 without any question. Buy this camera if you are a videographer…your wedding ceremonies and receptions will look fantastic and your clients will be very happy with your work. The XH A1 was so hard to move around with the LCD screen. OMG that can lead to a total disaster and I do not need that.

I try to move down and my big fingers would set the Auto Focus to manual….over and over and over again. That was the deal breaker along with the price and I am NOT buy some used Canon, either. God only knows what the prior owner did to it. If I am attempting to put in some transition on the XH A1…it would go into Auto Exposure and change it to manual. Man if that happened to me during a ceremony…I would get sued. Trust me…go with this camera…it is awesome…even in dark conditions and the menu works so much better than the Canon. I tried the Sony NEX too and liked it more than the XH A1…just an FYI.

Looks good, feels good (?), November 9, 2012

I have had the opportunity to work with this camera. At first glance, this looks like it’s an OFFICIAL camera. Then I picked it up and the feeling of holding an OFFICIAL camera magically vanished. It’s incredibly light, and this can be a good thing for some people who would carry this around their shoulders, but for stable video, it’s best to have a moderately heavy camcorder, as the inertial balance of the camera will stabilize the picture better than any in-lens stabilization system.

The construction on this camera does feel as though it is a bit…wobbly. If I could describe it, it’s a lot like when you would buy a happy meal from McDonalds. The plastic just feels cheap on it and the flip out screen could easily break off. Almost as though there is no aluminum or metallic internal frame of any sort, but just the plastic housing. It would require a lot of tender handling and not likely to survive many drops/bumps.

The picture on this is decent for high definition, if you are not zoomed at all, it is incredibly sharp. If it is zoomed in, the sharpness is slightly compromised. I looked at the glass on the front of the lens, and for a high end camera, there wasn’t much glass. It accepted a smaller filter size than my DSLR kit lens, which means that the sensor has to be small. Smaller sensors are going to mean that there is more noise in darker rooms.

Altogether I feel there are better options for investing your money into a camera, but it depends mostly on what you are looking for. This has video out ports on it like it’s hot, and would be great if you valued it as a live camera for recording something and then instantly reproducing it onto a projector/television screen/monitor. I do more post editing material that does not require live video, and with that, not requiring the sharpest and most controllable picture quality. For that, I will stick with my Canon XL2 MiniDV Camcorder and Canon DSLRs (7D and 5D Mark III). Great camera, but there are some things that just need to be considered with this.
