    Awesome sound and looks!!!, May 18, 2012

    I bought my Boston Acoustics Soundware S system (white) two weeks ago after an extensive research and I couldn’t be more happy with the purchase. Before the purchase, I was seriously considering also Harman Kardon HKTS 30 and Energy Take Classic systems. However, I currently live in Europe, where you can’t really buy Energy system and paying a shipping fee from the US for the Energy system wasn’t too encouraging. I hadn’t had a chance to actually listen to any of the systems (I know that’s a mistake), so I based my choice on reviews, the looks and the deal I was offered. After 2 weeks I can say that I don’t regret this choice at all.

    ==Out of the box==
    The system comes with two types of mounting brackets (for flat-wall mounting and corner mounting). You don’t need no extra mounting gear, except for some additional screws to drill the brackets to the wall and of course – the wire. Speaking of the wire, the manual says that you should use 16 or 18 gauge wire, which is really thin. I bought QED 15 gauge (1,5mm) wire and it works great. After the speakers are mounted, there is still some room for positioning the speaker; i.e. 40 degrees vertically and 20 degrees sideways. To be honest the positioning options were not sufficient for my living room (since I have really bizarre wall arrangement in my apartment), but I eventually managed to set them as I needed. When you hook up the speakers to the receiver, bear in mind that the speakers are bare-wire connected, so don’t buy no banana plugs or any other, since they won’t fit.

    ==Looks==
    They look as you can see in the pictures. They are approx. 40% bigger than the Soundware XS system; the size of the large apple. They blend in perfectly in the white-dominated furniture (like mine). The sub also doesn’t stand out.

    ==Performance==
    I hooked them to my Sony STR-DH 820 receiver, did the auto-calibration, then adjusted rear speakers a little and started enjoying the system. So far I watched a couple of blu-ray movies, blu ray concerts and some HD TV. The system works great with both the movies and the music (though I haven’t yet listened to CDs). The dialog is very crisp and strong, it’s perfectly balanced with the background effects. The subwoofer is also really impressive. During action sequences the walls are literally shaking (and I have a pretty large living room), even when it’s set to 50% of power. I’ve read in some forums that people had problems with woofer – it wood click or otherwise malfunction, but so far I had experienced no such trouble.

    Music listening experience is just a pure pleasure. I am not an audiophile, but I can tell the difference between my dad’s Bose Acoustimass and Soundware S speakers – the difference definitely in favour of Soundware S.

    ==Overall==
    A high quality system. No major flaws noted. If you are looking for a great sound for mid-size to large living rooms combined with fancy looks, this is the right choice.

    An excellent foolish purchase., August 29, 2012

    I absolutely did not need these, but having read such good things about the small SoundWare XS, I was intrigued by the upgraded, upsized SoundWare S version, and bought an open-box set for no apparent reason.

    When I opened the damaged box, I was kind of alarmed by how light the softball-sized plastic satellites were. The metal grill makes them at least look durable, but these weight next to nothing. That is usually a bad sign. Same with the pretty large 10 inch down-firing subwoofer. Surprisingly light, and the cabinet sounds like it is about one eighth inch thick.

    I have stuck to music so far, and I am downright giddy about how musical these sound. If pressed to find a fault, I could say the satellites lack a bit of mid-bass for deeper male vocals and the like — oh, and the speaker terminals do not accept banana plugs. But they sound way bigger than they are, the tweeter is not fatiguing or harsh, and the imaging is quite good. Honestly, they sound 90 percent as good as the excellent full-sized towers they are sitting on for now.

    The sub, despite the cheapy cabinet, seems to be worth the money retailers are charging for the whole 5.1 kit. Specs say 32Hz, and I have no doubt about that. It plays bass-heavy content at reference volumes without any clipping or chuffing. And it seems perfectly matched to the satellites, without ever sounding boomy or giving away its location despite a pretty high cutoff. If you have been burned by HTIB garbage before, rest assured this is a Real Sub.

    I don’t know how Boston pulled this off at this price point. They seem to have found the perfect places to keep costs down while still managing a very convincing, neutral sound and an attractive aesthetic. Plus, these come with all the mounting brackets a person could ever need. So if I ever figure out where to put this redundant system I foolishly bought, I know it will fit nicely.

    NOTE: The subwoofer, by virtue of being so lightweight, can sound like it has a blown woofer if it is placed on an even slightly uneven hard floor — and will even walk around the room under its own power. Putting it on a little rug solved both of these issues completely for me.

    I paid slightly more for this than the current price ($249). Well-made, beautiful sound, easy to mount and many options. Handles more power than any 5.1 receiver can throw at it. Sub is a little weak, and automated sound balancing is hit or miss depending on room size and configuration, but that barely detracts from the overall quality. A steal at $300, and an even bigger steal at this price. I am seriously considering buying another for the kids’ playroom just because it’s that good.
