    ….. cause I didn’t believe it either.

Quincy Jones + Studio Level speaker mfgr = quality I didn’t expect at a value I could never get through normal channels. I’m not an audiophile, but these create a better sound space than my local movie theater. I didn’t plan to add surround sound to my flat-screen till I found these, but now I actually look forward to sitting down to the sound as much as the picture with my new flat screen. For the first few weeks, we turned around on several occassions thinking someone might be in the house, when we heard a particularly clear back noise. It was eerie.

On the older silver line set that I own, lab analysis shows a nice, even sound across all bandwidths except for a narrow drop off just below the voice range. When I first bought these I thought I could hear that difference playing the same song back and forth with my home audio system. Now I don’t hear it, but I think I’ve just gotten used to it. Of course my home audio system can’t touch the clean simplicity of the highs on ribbon technology speakers.

As a point of comparison, when I sit in the comfy leather chair at Best-Buy to watch their top of the line set up, the sound is a little bit richer and beefier than this set up will deliver. Still, these aren’t toys themselves. At 110 pounds there’s a lot of mass in speaker magnets. When I come home to this I’m very satisfied with this sound. It’s way beyond the cheese-factor of a typical home theater in a box, conveys movie sound tracks and football games well enough to entrance (too well – I’ve gained 20 pounds) and the sense of things moving in space is believable and real. For me it’s clear enough that I’ve saved hundreds on movies I now watch at home instead of in the theater.

I think the way they can do this so cheaply is by not chasing the most recent audio format/standard on the receiver. You’ll notice Dolby doesn’t say “Dolby-HD.” Note too that there’s no built disc player, etc. Just sound stuff: a tuner and an amplifier. To my ears the quality of these speakers contributes a lot more than anything in the latest DTS or Dolby standard and, with good speakers, I can’t tell the difference. If your ears can tell the difference delivered by the most recent standards you may want to upgrade the receiver at some point and keep the speakers, or you may be able to hear things I can’t and need to be shopping in the 3-5k range. I love mine just as it is. They clearly have found an affordable way to harness ribbon technology too. I remember in the 80′s giant ribbon tech speakers were ultra high-end.

Note too that there is no HDMI pass-through connection on the back. That may be a deal breaker for some, it works fine for me. I just connect the optical port out of my TV to the optical in on this receiver. So, for blu-ray discs my BD player connects directly to the TV with HDMI and the TV connects to this receiver via optical. Works for me. The lack of HDMI pass through is probably another way they managed to kept the cost this low.

I had trouble believing you could get sound this good at this cost. If I hadn’t found the audio response data, I would have assumed the positive reviewers just didn’t know sound. I took a risk and was well rewarded. I’m no audiophile myself but my sense is I could get this quality, more connections, and maybe a little more volume if I were willing to spend about $2k on something else.

    Hope that helps.

they all want one!, June 24, 2010

First of all, because I am in Ohio, and this is where the product shipped from, it was here almost immediately. but I had also ordered speaker stands from a different vendor, and they came the same day. And so began the fun…
The unit is no lightweight, and not small in any way. I had to gerry-rig the speakers to work with the stands. I am a man of mechanics, so for me, no big deal, but the speakers are long, (all 5 are identical), and rounded. They come with stands that can be placed on some flat surface, like an end table or whatever, and they are fine; if not your situation, you will have to engineer something to get them up where you want them, or hang them on a wall.
The installation: they come preset, all you do is hook them up, you really don’t have to make any adjustments if you don’t want to. and..be prepared..if you aren’t real familiar with a higher-end system, don’t expect to make friends with the instruction manual; it is all basically in there, but if you aren’t already familiar with some of the connections, settings, variations, etc., you are in for a time. I say this because I am pretty familiar, this isn’t my first one, and some of it was still pretty challenging.
By itself, with, say, just the fm radio, no real big deal. Try incorporating a dvd, tv, etc. into the mix and, let’s just say this: the sherwood receiver gives plenty of options, and one can tweek and tweek all day long if one likes. But be careful. The fm wouldn’t come in at all without the antenna placed in exactly the right spot, and if you have the volume up, thinking that’s your problem, look out…
Finally, the sound: if you can find a better, louder, cheaper, better looking, better sounding, better seperation, whatever, marry it now. I’m dead serious. I’ve heard a LOT of systems..and I’ve owned several of them. My former system cost over $2500, not hard to do with several decent components, and the receiver never did it for me. I have been involved with music for over 50 years as a performer, producer, and afficionado of all sorts of musical genres and can honestly say I have never had the pleasure of owning a system that could produce this kind of sound, especially at this price. I am sure there are speakers and amps that cost a whole lot more that may twinkle just a bit more brightly or what-have-you. If you think you need that and you’ve got the cash, go for it. But for the money, you’d spend a lot more for very little improvement in sound quality. The bass is full, enough to fill the room, and the combination of ribbon tweaters and kevlar mids actually let one hear what is spoken in some of the muddiest soundtracks; music itself, especially on CD is simply breathtaking. LOUD. It will blow your hair back if you have any. The folks I have played this system for are knocked out, they all want one; if they’re the type that don’t have a system now, they at least want a system now, after hearing this one. I tell them, better get this one before they’re gone. You aren’t going to spend this kind of money and be satisfied with something else. I really have been looking for years, with a house, kids in school, etc. for something that wouldn’t break me, something justifiable in the grand scheme of things. I purchased the system as an upgrade, looking for something reasonable that would do it all. It does! I couldn’t be happier!

I did my research before buying this … I had known about SLS from their concert sound reinforcement products. As I understand it, this bundle is a mix of SLS speakers and the Sherwood (re-branded amp).

For whatever reason, SLS entered the consumer market and then pulled out. Likely because consumers markets are full of “consumers” who are likely only after the lowest price … etc … Probably more money to be made in their already successful concert products (Which are an industry standard by the way) …

In any event, the online seller of this bundle likely bought up all SLS remain speakers at a bargain …

Other reviewers are right when they say that the price is still good if it were for the speakers alone. They sound exceptional compared to just about anything I have heard. The amp (which is nice as well) is definitely worth it as well when you consider the overall price.

The speakers are loud and clear with great highs that are crisp and understandable. Music sounds great and cymbals/high hat work are crisp and out in front (nice and tight sounding) … Obvious ribbon technology. One thing obvious to me is that I can now understand all movie dialog even with other things going on. Even whispers are easily understandable. This was not the case on the Bose lifestyle system that I replaced …

The Sub Woofer is average to above average at this price point and does the job. Plenty of punch for what I am doing. Home theater, music, Game systems etc.

Basically, this is a situation where due to circumstances, you can buy speakers like this at a price point that really does not make sense … This system sounds as good as others costing 5-10 times as much because these speakers are obviously worth more than I paid …

I could go to the high end audio store locally and no doubt find something that sounds “better” but I would definitely be spending a lot more … And since this is a “family thing” it exceeds my needs already …

For the money, it is a very good value and sounds great … Just what I was looking for …
