At probably the higher end price point of a home theater in the box, this system fits the bill. This is what you get in the giant box it ships in:

Yamaha model YST-SW216 10″ side port sub
Yamaha speaker model NS-AP6500M, which are the front left and right speaker
Yamaha speaker model NS-AP6500E, which are the two rear channels, plus the large center channel
Yamaha home theater receiver model RX-V471
    Cheap low gauge speaker wire

I decided to go with this system, because it was cheaper, than buying a receiver separately, then adding speakers by a good chunk of change. Overall, Yamaha put a good package together. This is a large system, so two people are needed to move it into your home. In my case, I took it in piece by piece to the living room. As far unpacking it, that is easy enough. Everything seemed to be well packed and there was no damage. The components feel like Yamaha’s living up to their reputation of good quality.

All of the speakers are very large. Don’t expect to see little cube shaped rear speakers. They are considerably larger. The center channel I have also found to be rather huge in proportions. Same goes for the front right and left speakers. They are more like bookshelf speakers. At any rate, they all seem to feel solid and well made. The 10″ sub provided seems to provide good, solid low range. I personally don’t like the side firing style of the sub as much as the 10″ PSW10 Polk Audio sub I gave to some family members, but I can live with it. The sub is has a volume nob on that back, and speaker terminals. You also get with the system a cable to go from the sub to the receiver, plus a good amount of cheap low gauge speaker wire. I guess its alright, but anyone picky about wire may want to find something heavier duty. It works well enough for most purposes though.

Watching Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on Blu-Ray is nothing short of spectacular. Rumbling base, plenty of clarity, and dialog comes through nicely. I haven’t yet gone through the owner’s manual to see what in all the receiver can do, but it seems to have quite a list of features. One thing some might find negative is the lack of the iPod dock that plugs in the rear of the receiver; you have to purchase that separately. It does have a USB port on the front to plug your iPod or iPhone into. For me its not a big deal since I don’t own either devices. As far as connectivity, it has ports up the wazoo for pretty much all your gizmos. Another nice touch is the screen overlay if you want to make adjustments while watching a movie, etc. The only drawback is that it only works through the HDMI output. Otherwise, the menu overlay system is great. One other weird thing to note: it appears to me that you have to register each component of the system individually (the registration site is a bit confusing). And one other thing: I immediately found that I hated the remote the minute I looked at it. All kinds of buttons, which I hate. I suppose they did a well enough job separating the functions, but its in the closet. I use my Logitech Harmony 700 to control everything, which is so much easier and more efficient!

Overall, this seems to be a nice system, I just have to quit being lazy and read the owners manual for the receiver (which comes on a CD, not in print incidentally).

    Pros:
    -Awesome Quality.
    -Super loud and clear.
    -Easy to set-up.
    -On-screen menu.
    -Incredible bass.

    Cons:
    -Cheap, thin speaker wire.

This product is levels above the Bose® Lifestyle® T20 home theater system–Black That I purchased from Best buy prior to buying this. Was not impressed with the Bose for the money. This Yamaha system sounds better, gets louder than the Bose. Highly recommend!!

With a new Panasonic VIERA TC-P60ST30 60-Inch 1080p 600 Hz 3D Plasma HDTV I wanted a new sound system to go with it. You need it, really, or you have a beautiful picture with poor sound. I did a bunch of homework and ended up with this system. I picked it over the Yamaha YHT-595BL Complete 5.1-Channel Home Theater System mostly because of the larger front speakers.

Setting it up is easy enough except, of course, for routing the wires to the surround sound. (I found that I needed more than the 100 ft of speaker wire provided.) Calibrating is blissfully easy. Just plug in the provided mic and step through the on-screen selections (on the attached HDTV screen). It makes all of the required adjustments for the obstructions and whatnot around the speaker placements.

We watched a couple of movies and the sound is just like the movie theater. Just think of the money we’ll save not going out to the movies — the system will pay for itself.

Finally, I’ll add that this system should not be used like that in any house with adjoining walls. I live in a single family residence. Even then, when my sons were playing some first-person-shooter game, I asked them to close the windows. It all just sounds too real and I do not want to have the police on my doorstep with guns drawn.
