Not ready for prime time…, November 14, 2012

This review is from: HP Pavilion DM1-4310nr 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black) (Personal Computers)

I needed a small netbook with decent specs to replace my aging Toshiba 13″. This unit seemed to offer the best bang for the buck — at least on paper. Built in 4g was a huge selling point. I like this size, weight, screen and battery life, etc. — especially for the price. However, problems started as soon as I tried to do Windows 8 updates. The system froze after what seemed like hours. Called tech support and rep was very helpful, but Windows 8 and this machine too new and he was working in uncharted waters. Note — was told the midwest tech support office was closing soon and it was being moved offshore — not a good sign. System had to be completely refreshed and a large Windows update had to be hidden. After that the rest of the updates loaded. Since then more Windows 8 updates released and I tried to upload — only the small ones worked. Got message advising of update failure. There are now 3 large excluded updates that can’t be loaded.

I feel I am left with little choice but to return this machine. I think this system in Windows 7 would be a better fit. Windows 8 not ready for prime time — at least on this machine and Windows 8 in general seems like a solution in search of a problem.

Great Laptop, buggy drivers, December 19, 2012

I was just about ready to send this one back, but decided to give it one more shot with HP tech support. I normally shun tech support these days because of the severe offshore-ness that has infested support centers these days. However, I liked the cellular broadband capabilities of this unit and nothing else on the current market fits my requirements as this one does. The fellow in India I got connected with turned out to be an extremely knowledgeable chap with fine language skills. What it appears is that HP sent these little buggers out with terribly immature drivers for the cellular broadband networking and the support software loaded on this machine was also seriously deficient. It took the better part of an hour to get these items corrected, but the end result is a laptop that now functions as it should and fits the bill for me superbly. Also, Windows 8 is easily tamed to look and function nearly identical to Windows 7, so don’t let all the bad press and whining deter you. I recall the same loud noises when Windows 7 was sent to replace XP.

Advice for people who are having driver problems, December 30, 2012

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: HP Pavilion DM1-4310nr 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black) (Personal Computers)

I purchased this laptop and immediately switched its hard drive for an SSD. When I installed windows 8 on it, I had problems with a few drivers. They cause your laptop to not load your OS. You would have to do startup repair and “refresh” your PC. However, I found out that you can install the graphics driver without any problems. Another driver you might want is the Wi-fi card driver, but it will cause your computer to have startup problems. A work around is to connect to the Internet using the included T-mobile SIM card or using an Ethernet cable. After you’re connected, go to Device Manager and you’ll find an exclamation mark next to your network driver. Right click on it and choose “update driver.” And then let it search automatically online and it’ll find the driver and install it. That way, you’ll get the two most important drivers: the graphics driver and wifi card. Until HP fixes the other drivers, these two should allow you to operate your computer smoothly.
